Over their course of study, students are required to take three different kinds of field education. These three areas allow students to grow in knowledge and develop skills for future ministry.
Church Ministry
Students do various types of ministry in local churches: preaching, teaching classes for adults, teaching Sunday school, organizing Bible studies, youth groups, men’s and women’s groups and doing evangelism. Students are encouraged to be consistent in their attendance, learn to plan events, set and reach goals and analyze their own successes and failures.
Social Ministry
This involves getting experience working with different kinds of people and problems in society. Christians, and especially missionaries, should be able to preach not just with words but with deeds, showing love and attention to people who are sick, lonely and frustrated with life.
Summer Internship (Practicum)
Students are sent on two month mission trips to different parts of Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and other countries. Students gain experience in cross-cultural communication, learn to adapt to work with local churches and are able to grow in their vision for future ministry.
Christian Ethics
In addition to the three required forms of field education, students may choose to participate in a fourth kind of field education, teaching “Christian Ethics” courses in Donetsk and Makeevka public schools. Both DCU students and staff are involved in this ministry. Over the course of the school year, every week students give lessons in public grade schools. They teach children to respect adults and parents. They teach moral values and Christian principles. They teach about the dangers of drugs and premarital sex, including AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.
Through these lessons, DCU students are able to grow in their teaching and communication skills with non-Christian youth. Students are encouraged to be creative and develop new methods of sharing the gospel.
